The Pricing Game
Creative Professional Series Webinar

Thu., January 26, 11:00am-12:30pm

Register https://www.graphicartistsguild.org/webinar-series/

You’ll be given the specs for a variety of real-world design and illustration projects – exactly the type of information you would gather before bidding on a job. You’ll then be able to “bid” on the job, or submit the fee you would charge. The actual estimated fee is finally revealed, as well as the artist’s reasoning on how the price was derived.
Leighton Hubbell, art director (logo project) and Josh Korwin (brand identity) will be joining us to answer questions live about how they price their work.

We’ll be presenting 4-6 projects, including:

Brand identity: publication, website, print collateral. Designer: Josh Korwin, Three Steps Ahead
Event illustration: illustration for an invitation and poster Illustrator: Lisa Rivard, Lisa Rivard Illustration
Logo design: Illustrative designer and art director: Leighton Hubbell
Book jacket illustration: Illustrator: Lyn Boyer
Website Design: for a non-profit organization. Designer: Tina Reynolds, Uptown Studios

Guest Presenters:

Josh Korwin is the owner and creative director of Three Steps Ahead, an LA-based studio offering a full slate of design services, from print materials and websites, through identity design and type/font design. His keen interest in typography is expressed most aptly in his Twitter profile: “Born to font.” Most recently, Josh launched the Ludlow Project, a joint effort with the International Printing Museum to preserve a collection of 100 full fonts of antique Ludlow Typecasting matrices.

Leighton Hubbell is an award winning illustrative designer and art director with 20+ years of experience. Formerly an art director at DDB Dallas (where he was awarded a CLIO award), Leighton runs his own multidisciplinary studio, specializing in logo design, corporate identity, and branding. His extensive list of awards includes Print’s Regional Design Annuals, HOW, and ADDYs. His logos have been featured in over 30 books on design. Artists active in social media will know Leighton as an outspoken critic of speculative practices.

WordPress is everywhere these days, not just as a blogging platform, but as an excellent Content Management System. If you’re ready to start blogging as a means of self-promotion, or you have clients who want to update their own websites, this is a great time to start looking at WordPress. It’s free, open source, versatile for any kind of website and accessible to a broad range of skill levels.

We’ll look at how to get started with WordPress for yourself, how to create a simple site for your clients, or work with a developer for more complex projects. Additionally, we’ll look at the limitations and challenges within WordPress and deconstruct some of its language so that everyone in the project stays happy.

Erik Fadiman is the Interactive Design Instructor at Seattle Central Creative Academy. He wears two hats as WordPress designer/developer. He really likes working with other designers and bringing their designs to life in WordPress.

Note: There are two Seattle Design Center buildings connected by a skybridge: the Atrium (shorter, on the south) and Plaza Building (taller, on the north)
EAFA Gallery is in the Plaza Building on the 2nd floor, suite 292.

Web analytics are a window into the world of your website’s users and their behavior. At first glance, it can look like a tangled wilderness. Just what do all those numbers and percentages mean? Which are truly important? How much traffic do you really have?

Google Analytics is the leader of software programs used to track and interpret data generated by traffic to your website. It can improve your marketing efforts by giving you insights into how to optimize your campaigns and website. Among its greatest powers is what it reveals about your website’s users. Follow the user as he or she navigates through your website by learning how to read the language of web analytics.

Georgia will begin with basic terms and simple installation guidelines, then move on to:

The significance of web analytics for your bottom line.
Key components of the Google Analytics interface.
Next-level tutorials on tracking conversions and search terms for slightly braver souls.

For total beginner and experienced user alike. If you have a website, you need this seminar.

A website developer since 1999, Georgia Ball has used web analytics to gain proven results for national corporations, small business, advertising agencies and non-profit organizations. She began the first analytics executive summaries within Wyndham Vacation Ownership in 2006, inspiring changes in business practices that measurably improved sales and customer service.

Also a long-time multimedia designer, she has previously designed for such companies as Microsoft, IBM, and the Cartoon Network and is currently employed in the online advertising division of the Walt Disney Company.

She is the author of the webcomic Scooter and Ferret and the upcoming Strawberry Shortcake comic books by Ape Entertainment.

Sara Chapman and I had a long conversation the other day about what I should cover in my talk for January’s workshop. We were chatting about positioning creative businesses and she said, “You should talk about how to find out who you are and how to sell it.”

Perfect topic, because that’s what I’ve spent my life doing. When I was building my own company, I continually tweaked our positioning to fit changing times and talents. Currently, as a consultant, my primary focus is to help creative people develop products and services that both fit them and meet their client’s needs.

So, that’s what we’ll talk about this month. If your business is not growing, the experiences I’ll share will give you some insight into how to turn it around.

If you have any thoughts you’d like to share that could contribute to the talk, send me a note at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

About Ted:

In 1985 Ted and Carolyn Leonhardt founded The Leonhardt Group (TLG) a Seattle design agency. They grew TLG to $10 million and sold it 1999. After the sale Ted became Chief Creative Officer/Global for Cordiant Communications Group’s London office where he assembled 25 design offices under the Fitch brand.

Today, Ted provides management consulting services to creative businesses. He helps companies adapt to changes in the marketplace by developing new products and services. Other areas of focus include sales help, marketing and positioning. He is an expert in people issues of all kinds: partner disputes, team building and difficult negotiations.

Ted is an in demand speaker and writer for organizations and publications such as: AIGA, GD:USA, Packaging, Marketing, Communication Arts, and How Magazine.

Ted believes that creative people will play a definitive role in shaping the future, with powerful, design-driven organizations showing the way.

Join us for October’s SPGA Seattle Graphic Artists Guild workshop and luncheon where J’net Smith will talk about potentially lucrative areas of the licensing business for graphic artists of all kinds.

This workshop will be jampacked with hard-to-get information about the industry, and give you clear “how to” instructions. J’net has spent more than 20 years in marketing and licensing gathering the “30 Dirty Secrets of Art Licensing.”

The presentation will include:
* How to get into the business
* What it takes to create a profitable and thriving business
* What to ask agents
* Why art licensing is potentially much more lucrative than other art fields
- and 26 more eye-openers.

Whether you have enjoyed one of J’net’s classes already or haven’t heard her speak before, you won’t want to miss this fast-paced, direct and detailed presentation. J’net is known for her informational and motivational approach and we’ve included plenty of time for you to ask questions, so come prepared.

Jeanette Smith, owner of J’net Smith Marketing - Licensing - Publishing, has more than 20 years of experience in the licensing and publishing industries. In just six short years, J’net turned Dilbert? from a relatively unknown syndication-based comic strip into a $200-million-a-year global brand.

Then in 2000 J’net began to train, advise and license all types of creators. She has helped hundreds of artists, graphic designers, painters, photographers, authors, illustrators, design firms, fine artists, creative companies, non-profits and agents to maximize the power of their brands and talents.

Today she also enjoys frequent speaking engagements which have included the SEA (Self-Employment for Artists) Conferences, LIMA’s Licensing University, the National Graphic Artists Guild and the upcoming 2010 CTN (Creative Talent Network) Animation Conference.

Jeanette is originally from the Northwest and lives with her family in Seattle. For more information visit http://www.allartlicensing.com

@font-face allows web designers to specify online fonts to display text on their web pages. By allowing authors to provide their own fonts, @font-face eliminates the need to depend on the limited number of fonts users have installed on their computers. While type foundries had been hesitant to “release their fonts into the wild” for fear of piracy or problems with Digital Rights Management, they are now taking the plunge and there are free and paid services which allow you to embed fonts into your web pages. The good news is that @font-face is supported across all browsers, (EVEN IE6) so if you know a few tricks, you can start using @font-face today!

Lloyd Dangle shares his experiences from twenty years of drawing the screwball political comic strip, Troubletown (it ran in Seattle’s The Stranger for over fifteen years until they recently put it on “hiatus”). Dangle’s Sly and Snide Slideshow (say that three times fast) discusses political cartooning in the post-9-11, post-irony, post-George Bush, post-newspaper epoch. Dangle even shares some of his favorite hate mail. It’s a delicious romp through recent political history in inimitable Troubletown style.

Beautiful Angle:

For over seven years, writer Tom Llewellyn and graphic designer Lance Kagey have handcranked posters through their vintage letterpress to adorn the streets of Tacoma with pithy commentary and compelling visuals. One of the lessons learned is how to talk to their community. Tom and Lance come to share some of their stories.

Don’t despair. Writing for social media - more than any other business format - demands that you be YOURSELF. This isn’t creative writing.  It’s learning to translate what you say, who you are, and how you move in the world into words that convey your personality and style.  Learning to do this effectively helps you BE your brand and share that with the world.

Write for your business in a way that’s simple and streamlined.  Promote your brand in a way that is meaningful to you and your audience. The freedom of social media writing lets you say what you really want to say.

Amy Posner, an expert at traditional business writing, has been writing accessible marketing material for more than 20 years.
